Feature Project ALA MOANA CENTER EXPANSION Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii

One of Dick Pacific’s proudest accomplishments is the split-level, third-floor addition to Honolulu’s Ala Moana Shopping Center. We enjoyed tackling the job’s complexities, and among our challenges was constructing the 130,000 square foot project without disrupting ongoing retail operations. Together with mall management, we developed a unique construction plan that sheltered mall tenants and customers, yet enabled us to maximize the efficiency of construction crews working around the clock. Construction activities included using five tower cranes to erect and secure structural steel framework, establishing new interstitial areas in the center’s deluxe center court, creating soldering and metal working techniques to isolate those operations from mall patrons’ and tenants’ views, and dealing with integration issues so as to seamlessly meld the new expansion into a 40-year-old shopping center.
